Labuan is a large coastal municipality in Kabupaten Pandeglang, Banten province in Indonesia. Situated on a small Island just off the coast of Sunda Strait and elevated on 10 meters height (33 ft) above sea level. Geographically being in the western part of Java Island. It took 3 hours drive from capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta. Total area 15.66 km2 (9.73 miles). There are about 53,861 people living in the town, and it is a large resort, with quite good beaches. Out of the total amount of population, 52% is male and female 48%.
Main Occupation: Fishermen, Farmers, Casual Labors.
Education: According to education level, the portion is consecutively Elementary School 36%, High School 23%. Drop Out of Elementary School (21%), and Junior High School (15%).
One-third of girls in the developing world are married before the age of 18 and 1 in 9 are married before the age of 15. This is happening in this place, Labuan. In early age, they can’t continue their education. They married in young age. Early marriage is part of their lives. The early marriage girls are caused so many problems, including to their children, such as:
lack of education
life in poverty
polygamy
sexual abuse by their husbands and post-traumatic stress such as feelings of hopelessness, and severe depression.
early divorce
prostitutions
slaves
Most of them can’t afford to own their own home. They live with their three (3) generations at the same house. Grandparents, children and grandchildren. Their homes are built with dirt floor, palm roof, and bamboo walls. Lack of clean water. The well water is commonly used to supply the household for water supplies. However, since the area is so closed to the ocean, with well water is easily contaminate. Poor plumbing systems, and using kerosene oil for their lighting (used back in 1850).
Indonesian Three Magnolias, Inc. has a mission to improve and create a better life by providing them a basic education for women & children to become independence.
To provide the place or facility to study, using volunteers human power to use their talented and creativity to teach them in different fields, such as and not limited: sewing, cooking, reading, writing, knitting, and cosmetology. Hoping that they can be independence by utilize their talents to improve their lives for a better future.
As a team of Indonesian of Three Magnolias, Inc., including professional educators/education volunteers, and office assistance staff, with more than 10 years ‘combined experience, we became aware of several crucial facts that needs urgent solutions:
Thank you to Nuri Auger, as a President of ITM who lending her house temporary to start the activity, and we are doing all in our power to start a repairing process of the house where this place can be used for learning center or class room as soon as possible.
In addition to the land donation, we still need more funding in operation, such as several large contributions of stationary and books, construction of building, to maintain the place, the electricity, internet, telephone, educators & assistance salaries, building repairs & maintenance, transportation, security, and other school materials to reach our goals.
